Carbon dioxide makes you fat and other climate crazies

Besides the scientific debate over climate change, there are fringe issues, and following are some of  the wackiest, some amusing, some ominous.

Carbon dioxide will make you fat:

Some Danish researchers think we are getting fatter and fatter because of the increasing CO2 levels in the atmosphere.  Their reasoning: “We breathe more CO2, which makes our blood more acidic; this affects our brain, so we want to eat more.”

See full story at ScienceNordic here.

Engineering the human body to combat climate change:

“From drugs to help you avoid eating meat to genetically engineered cat-like eyes to reduce the need for lighting, a wild interview about changes humans could make to themselves to battle climate change.”  We could also use genetic engineering or hormone therapy in order to birth smaller, less resource-intensive children.

See full story in the Atlantic here.

Population reduction:

Dr Philip Cafaro, who teaches on environmental philosophy and ethics at Colorado State University writes, “Ending human population growth is almost certainly a necessary (but not sufficient) condition for preventing catastrophic global climate change. Indeed, significantly reducing current human numbers may be necessary in order to do so.”  See the good doctor’s paper here.

Some other researchers, writing about abortion may be in Cafaro’s camp: Academic philosophers Alberto Giubilini  and Francesca Minerva have a peer-reviewed paper in which they say that killing newborns is okay, and even in some cases is to be encouraged.  See report here.

How about some  nice green “friction-reduced” tires for your car?

“Friction-reduced” tires will save fuel (and probably reduce the number of drivers on the road, eventually).  “Concern over greenhouse gas emissions and global warming prompted calls on major industries to lessen their carbon footprint and produce products that are not harmful to the planet. Meanwhile, a tightening of legislation restricting the amount of greenhouse gas emissions from trucks and cars led car manufacturers to develop new tires that help decrease carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.”  See story here.

Need to monitor your carbon footprint?

Picarro, a Silicon Valley startup company, has developed a desktop computer-sized device to continuously monitor carbon dioxide content in the local air.  Get one for your neighborhood along with a poster-sized picture of “Big Brother.” Prices to be announced.

If all of the above doesn’t amuse you, then try the complete list of things caused by global warming.

  1. But we don’t need to shrink ourselves to reduce our carbon footprint. Evolution will do it for us:

“… another paper in the journal Science suggests why there might be no need for this. Global warming will produce short people. The study found that during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, a period when temperatures on the planet rose by around 10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit, small horses shrunk even smaller in size.”
