Real environmentalism can go hand in hand with natural resource production, private property rights, and access to public lands

THE STATE OF THE VIRUS

“COVID-19 vaccine mandates are necessary because the vaccinated need to be protected from the unvaccinated — by forcing the unvaccinated to get the vaccine that didn’t protect the vaccinated.” – source unknown

Note: If you would like to get a supply of ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine you can contact Dr. Jane Orient, President of Doctors for Disaster Preparedness, at her Tucson office at 7598 N. La Cholla. Call 520 325-2686 for an appointment . Note that Dr. Orient does not take insurance or credit cards. An office visit costs $50 per person. The cost of crying wolf

by John Cochrane

Why do so many Americans believe crazy things? Maybe not “crazy,” but beliefs that wildly get wrong factual costs and benefits, such as those of vaccines? It does not help that they have been lied to, over and over again. Why should they believe anything now? Our elites, and in particular our public health bureaucrats, though invoking the holy name of “science,” have been trying to massage public psychology via deliberate obfuscation for a few years now. There is little science of managing public psychology, and if there is, epidemiologists don’t have it. There is some good ancient wisdom, as codified in the story of the boy who cried wolf. We do know that when lies are exposed, when elites are shown to be disparaging and trying to manipulate average people, trust erodes. (Read more) ☼

It’s Time to Admit Failure in the War Against COVID

By Steve McCann

Israel has been at the forefront of the unconventional/politically-oriented means of combatting a respiratory virus.

Despite nearly 90% of the adult population being fully vaccinated, with vaccines originally touted as nearly 100% effective in preventing COVID-19 infection, Israel is currently experiencing the highest rate of COVID-19 infections since the pandemic began. There is no magic solution in sight except ultimate herd immunity which the latest variant, omicron, may well bring about.

The same is true for virtually every Western country, including the United States, that has followed the same procedures and protocols. Having, for political reasons, stupidly committed to doing the impossible, defeating or eradicating a respiratory virus, it is time to admit failure.

That’s assuming the bureaucrats and governing elites, in their hubris, are capable of doing so. If not, then the citizenry must say ‘no’ and do it for them.

From the beginning of the pandemic, Israel enforced lockdowns and isolation, mask mandates, travel restrictions, and mass vaccinations. Then they returned to lockdowns and mandates for additional booster shots when their great hope, the vaccines, did not work as advertised.

Throughout the pandemic, they, as did their counterparts in the United States, refused to consider any other alternatives. Other proven therapeutics such as ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine, were ridiculed and effectively outlawed as the fixation on vaccines drove the medical bureaucracy, resulting in the needless hospitalization and deaths of thousands.

The corporate and social media in both countries ridiculed, slandered, and discredited thousands of medical professionals and scientists who criticized the regimens and proposed common-sense solutions based on previous experience and knowledge of respiratory viruses. The Great Barrington Declaration has been signed by more than 916,000 such doctors and scientists from around the world. Their proposals were ignored and essentially outlawed by the bureaucracies in both countries. (Read more) ☼

Why suppress early safe treatments for Covid? Here’s $24 billion reasons

by JoNova

People are asking why early safe cheap treatments could have been suppressed, after all, people are dying. A better question is to ask how could any cheap safe alternative treatment ever be selected? In the current system, legally, the FDA can’t give EUA (Emergency Use Authorization) for any vaccine if there is a safe useful alternative. The EUA approval is simply extinguished by any treatment that works. Therefore billions of dollars in profits depends on making sure there are no cheap safe alternatives. (Read more) ☼

Boris’s Salvo of Freedom: Johnson Cancels the Pandemic in England

By Vasko Kohlmayer

Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, walked into the British Parliament and made the most consequential statement by a political leader since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

This is what Johnson said in part, to the cheers of the assembled parliamentarians:

“Next week mandatory [vaccine] certification will end… We will end the compulsory use of Covid status certification in England… From now, the government is no longer asking people to work from home and people should now speak to their employers about arrangements for returning to the office… [T]he government will no longer mandate the wearing of face masks anywhere… we will trust the judgement of the British people and no longer criminalize anyone who chooses not to wear one [mask]… There will soon come a time when we can remove the legal requirement to self-isolate altogether – just as we don’t place legal obligations on people to isolate if they have flu… We will set out our long-term strategy for living with Covid-19, explaining how we hope and intend to protect our liberty and avoid restrictions in future by relying instead on medical advances…” (Read more) ☼

STATE OF THE UNION

The dangerous Executive Order no one is talking about

by Alex Epstein

The Biden Administration recently issued an Executive Order that commits the Federal Government to reduce emissions 65% by 2030 and be “net zero” by 2050. This commitment is suicidal because 3/4 of government energy use is for defense—and most of that must come from fossil fuels.

Our government has a sacred obligation to do everything it can to protect our lives and freedom—including those of our troops. Joe Biden recently violated this obligation flagrantly by committing the Federal government to wildly inferior “net zero” energy sources.

Our lives, freedom, and troops depend on a defense system that is committed to using the absolute best possible tools to protect America. Above all, this means the best forms of energy to power the myriad machines, including weapons, that this country’s defense depends on.

Defending our country requires so much energy that over 3/4 the Federal Government’s energy use is for defense. The vast majority of this energy is fossil fuel—the most cost-effective and often only way to power our defense. Oil-based jet fuel alone is over 50% of DOD’s energy.

Can biofuels make Biden’s net-zero commitment work by replacing oil? Not even close. Biofuels scale terribly, because they require huge amounts of scarce farmland. They are also a security risk because their supply chain is heavily dependent on China (e.g., for phosphate).

The bottom line is that actually pursuing “net zero” would destroy our military and lead the US to be conquered by our enemies. Thus, our government will not pursue “net zero” at all consistently. But Biden’s public commitment to “net zero” guarantees myriad deadly half-measures. (Read more) ☼

How Biden torched the Trump recovery

by Liz Peek, The Hill

As Biden first set foot in the Oval Office a year ago, real GDP was growing at 6.3 percent, inflation was 1.4 percent, the price of gasoline was $2.39 a gallon and Michigan’s consumer sentiment index stood at 79. Today, real growth has slowed to just over 2 percent, inflation is at 7 percent, gas is up to $3.31 a gallon and the Michigan Index is 68.8.

In addition, real wages dropped 2.4 percent over the past year, with inflation overwhelming pay hikes after several years of gains under President Trump.

In just one year, Biden has managed to torch an economy that was recovering robustly when he took office. One bad decision after another, compounded, to be sure, by certain events beyond his control, have scuttled the turnaround that was well underway the day he became president.

His major mistakes? Depressing oilfield investment, reversing U.S. oil output and leaving us at the mercy of OPEC and higher gasoline prices; stoking out-of-control federal spending with the Democrat-only American Rescue Plan (ARP), sidelining millions of workers and fueling an ongoing labor shortage; delivering mask mandates that have exacerbated that worker shortage; ignoring the resulting inflation until voters rebelled, demanding the Federal Reserve take what may be harsh measures to change course. A Regulatory Burden for Every Room of Your House

Is America Heading for a Systems Collapse?

by Victor Davis Hanson

In modern times, as in ancient Rome, several nations have suffered a “systems collapse.” The term describes the sudden inability of once prosperous populations to continue with what had ensured the good life as they knew it.

Abruptly, the population cannot buy, or even find, once plentiful necessities. They feel their streets are unsafe. Laws go unenforced or are enforced inequitably. Everyday things stop working. The government turns from reliable to capricious if not hostile.

Joe Biden’s young presidency may already be leading the United States into a similar meltdown. Hard Left “woke” ideology has all but obliterated the idea of a border. Millions of impoverished foreigners are entering the United States illegally—and during a pandemic without either COVID-19 tests or vaccinations. The health bureaucracies have lost credibility as official communiques on masks, herd and acquired immunity, vaccinations, and comorbidities apparently change and adjust to perceived political realities. After decades of improving race relations, America is regressing into a premodern tribal society. Crime soars. Inflation roars. Meritocracy is libeled and so we are governed more by ideology and tribe. (Read more) ☼

Democrats say ID should be needed to walk the streets, but not to vote

By Eric Utter

Beginning January 15, 2022, adult citizens wishing to walk the streets of Washington, D.C. will need to wear a mask and carry proof of vaccination with them. And possess a photo ID. This is per Mayor Muriel Bowser’s orders. So here we have a Democrat demanding that everyone wishing to take a stroll or walk his dog must have proper identification on him. Yet Democrats in the nation’s capital are frantically pushing a bill that would mandate that no state, city, or precinct require an ID of those voting in presidential elections. (Read more) ☼

Left-wing group secured $158 million taxpayer-funded contract to help illegal immigrants avoid deportation

Beware Of The Useful Idiots

How to create a socialist state by Saul Alinsky:

There are eight levels of control that must be obtained before you are able to create a social state. The first is the most important.

1. Healthcare – Control healthcare and you control the people.

2. Poverty – Increase the Poverty level as high as possible; poor people are easier to control and will not fight back if you are providing everything for them to live.

3. Debt – Increase the debt to an unsustainable level. That way you are able to increase taxes, and this will produce more poverty.

4. Gun Control– Remove the ability to defend themselves from the government. That way you are able to create a police state.

5. Welfare – Take control of every aspect of their lives (Food, Housing, and Income).

6. Education – Take control of what people read and listen to – take control of what children learn in school.

7. Religion – Remove the belief in God from the government and schools.

8. Class Warfare – Divide the people into the wealthy and the poor. This will cause more discontent, and it will be easier to tax the wealthy with the support of the poor.

Does any of this sound like what is happening to the United States? Alinsky merely simplified Vladimir Lenin’s original scheme for world conquest by communism, under Russian rule. Stalin described his converts as “Useful Idiots.” Useful Idiots have destroyed every nation in which they have seized power and control. It is presently happening at an alarming rate in the U.S. “It is difficult to free fools from the chains they revere.” (Source) ☼

Biden Officials Defy Critical Civil Rights Law

By Ed Sherdlu

Joe Biden and his cronies have a never-ending need to prove their “Wokeness.” In their latest attempt, the Food and Drug Administration decreed racial minorities will get preference over Whites in receiving the limited supplies of critically needed COVID-fighting drugs. Beyond the blatant racism, this taxpayer-funded dictate is clearly illegal. Officials in the Biden administration implementing these racial preferences subject themselves to prison terms every time they do.

Title 18, Section 282 of the U.S. Code says:

Whoever, under color of any law, statute, ordinance, regulation, or custom, willfully subjects any person in any State, Territory, Commonwealth, Possession, or District to the deprivation of any rights, privileges, or immunities secured or protected by the Constitution or laws of the United States shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both…. if bodily injury results from the acts committed in violation of this section, imprisoned not more than ten years…. and if death results from the acts committed in violation of this section, for any term of years or for life, or sentenced to death. Global Coal Consumption Reaches New Record High In 2021…China, India Consuming Two Thirds

By P Gosselin

According to the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Coal 2021 report, coal-fired electricity generation reached an all-time high in 2021, increasing a whopping 9% in 2021.

The increase was driven by the rapid economic recovery. Globally, a total of 10,350 terawatt-hours of electricity was generated from coal. The IEA report says that global coal demand could well reach a new all-time high in the next two years and would likely stay near these levels for the next few years. More than 600 new coal-fired power plants are planned in Asia. The IEA says China and India now account for two-thirds of global coal consumption, despite their efforts to expand renewables and other low-carbon energy sources. (Read more) ☼

Remember U.S. Energy Independence Day?

By Stephen Moore

By January 2021, exactly a year ago and Trump’s last month in office, for the first time in nearly 50 years, the U.S. was producing more oil than we were consuming. We imported no net oil from Saudi Arabia and the OPEC cartel nations. We were also producing more oil and gas than the Russians and the Arabs.

Free at last.

Biden has come into office, and after one year, we have seen a 4% surplus of domestic oil and gas production fall to a 4% oil and gas deficit. We have gone from energy independence back to energy dependence. This is because Biden has declared war on American energy. He has killed pipelines and reversed almost all of Trump’s pro-drilling policies. In early January. (Read more) ☼

Today’s Soaring Energy Prices Are Only The Beginning

by Bjorn Lomborg

Energy prices are soaring, and it’s likely a sign of things to come. The rise can be blamed on a variety of things, including the demand rebound after the lockdowns ended, a drop in renewable electricity output from a lack of wind in Europe during most of 2021, and increasingly costly climate policies. But while the pandemic will end and the wind will blow again, climate policies to achieve “net-zero” emissions will keep hiking prices. (Read more) ☼

‘Lithium Triangle’: Latin America Is The Middle East Of Rare Earth Mining

by Jack M. Mintz

Mining products needed for electrification include lithium, copper, graphite, and manganese. The “Lithium Triangle” — Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile — controls 58 percent of the world’s 78 million metric tons of lithium reserves. The International Energy Agency predicts that If the world successfully moves to net-zero emissions by 2050, the demand for lithium will balloon 42 times by 2040 (from about 200,000 to 8.4 million metric tons).

That will rapidly eat up existing reserves. More lithium likely will be found but the Lithium Triangle will be in a strong position to control the market. (Read more) ☼

Southern Ocean storms cause outgassing of carbon dioxide

University of Gothenburg

Storms over the waters around Antarctica drive an outgassing of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, according to a new international study with researchers from the University of Gothenburg. The world’s southernmost ocean that surrounds Antarctica, plays an important role in the global climate because its waters contain large amounts of carbon dioxide. “We show how the intense storms that often occur in the region increase ocean mixing and bring carbon dioxide-rich waters from the deep to the surface. This drives an outgassing of carbon dioxide from the ocean to the atmosphere.” (Read more) ☼

Crossing (or not) the 1.5 and 2.0C thresholds

by Judith Curry

The strategy to limit global warming is tied directly to limiting the amount of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. Emissions targets are a centerpiece of the UNFCCC Paris Agreement. The goal of the emissions targets is to limit global warming to well below 2, preferably 1.5 degrees Centigrade, compared to pre-industrial levels (typically the baseline period 1851-1900).

This post illustrates how natural climate variability could influence the global mean surface temperature change through 2050, and hence influence the time of crossing the 1.5 and 2.0oC thresholds. Specifically, alternative scenarios of volcanic eruptions, solar variability and internal climate variability are considered. All of the components of natural variability point to cooling during the period 2020-2050. (Read more) ☼

Beware Moving Climate Goal posts

by Ron Clutz

Global temperature was on course to meet the 2-degree target without any emissions cuts. Therefore the goal posts must be changed to a 1.5-degree target.

The international climate alarmist industry comprises a number of special interests. There are the activists, fundamentally anti-human and deeply disingenuous, demanding that billions of the global poor suffer and die in order that the planet be “saved.” There are the “experts” in pursuit of bigger budgets and “research” grants. There are the editors of the peer-reviewed journals, transforming “science” into a propaganda exercise. There are the bureaucrats massively expanding their budgets and powers, the politicians seeking to transfer ever more wealth, and the journalists desperate to produce clickbait even as they remain invincible in their ignorance.

There are the official “environmental” groups whose business model is the use of political, regulatory, and judicial processes to steal other people’s property. There are the foundation officials writing checks in hot pursuit of invitations to the right cocktail parties. There are the Hollywood airheads addicted to thunderous applause on the red carpets. Don’t forget the corporate gasbags myopic, ignorant, incapable of ideological battle, and so naïve as actually to believe that they can placate the environmental Left. There are the international organizations striving toward utopia through ever-greater coercion. And – of course – there are the innumerable useful idiots engaged in virtue-signaling. (Read more) ☼

What The Climate Scare And Pandemic Fearmongering Have In Common

I & I Editorial Board

Climate alarmists have said it’s necessary to ratchet up the fear about global warming to get the public’s attention. It’s the same story with the coronavirus outbreak. Authorities wanted to strike fear in the people, so they exaggerated the lethality of a virus deadly to only a narrow demographic segment. The chilling fact there is much to be afraid of – not of a falling sky or a virus that we hope is on the wane, but of those eager to stir up dread and anxiety so they exercise the raw power they covet. Cambridge University is Pushing for Tyranny in the Name of Climate Change

by Anthony Watts

A recent paper published by Cambridge University Press titled Political Legitimacy, Authoritarianism, and Climate Change is raising serious and worrisome questions about the role of academia in our national political debate on climate change. The paper was written by Ross Mittiga, who self-describes as an “assistant professor of political theory at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, specializing in climate ethics.” He also labels himself an “environmentalist, vegan, and occasional gadfly.”

Mittiga’s paper explicitly argues society must prioritize climate action over democratic principles and adopt an authoritarian government if society fails to politically act on climate change. Or, in the words of the political left: “my way or the highway.”

This is disturbing because it completely ignores the will of the people to self-govern, favoring a totalitarian approach in order to tackle what Mittiag deems a “climate crisis.” (Read more) ☼

Facts on climate and energy

by Dr. Jay Lehr

Here is a list of basic truisms that might shock even you, our reader, that must be spread to stop the wave of economic suicidal thinking. Yes eliminating fossil fuels is a suicidal plan already under way in nations such as Canada, Australia and Germany that are entering energy desperation.

1- Talking about decarbonizing life would be the same as ending all life. All life on earth is carbon based.

2- When the left talks of carbon, they really mean carbon dioxide but they want you to envision soot and coal dust.

3- Carbon dioxide is under no circumstances a pollutant. It is a gas that allows plants to grow and animals to survive.

4- The concept of a carbon footprint is a fraud. It really describes how much carbon dioxide your life style emits.

5- At 420 parts per million (ppm) carbon dioxide in today’s atmosphere, we are finally out of danger of starving all plant life of this necessary gas. Plants can not survive when CO2 is below 150 ppm. We were perilously close to that concentration when the atmosphere had only 280ppm before World War II. Now agriculture and forestry are reaping significant benefits from the additional carbon dioxide in today’s atmosphere.

6- We have found no level of carbon dioxide which is injurious to human health. We know nuclear submarines travel around the world under water with an average of 5000 ppm of carbon dioxide in the air and no illness has ever occurred as a result.

7 – Renewable sources of energy such as wind and solar may be of value to your home if you have a wind mill or photovoltaic cells in your back yard or roof feeding electricity directly into your home. However no wind or solar power has any value to add power to an electric grid of which the US has three, East, West and Texas. The grids can never afford to depend on intermittent power contributions. Therefore for every kilowatt hour of power of wind or solar on the grid they must install an equal or greater amount of fossil fuel power running at 100% at all times ready to replace wind or solar when the wind does not blow at a proper speed or the sun does not shine. That is called the Ciccone/Lehr renewable electric energy Rule of Thumb.

8- All the wind and solar power attached to an electric grid add no power at all, only the cost of constructing the backup fossil fuel power.

9- All nations that have invested heavily in wind or solar are seeing their energy costs skyrocket and brownouts and blackouts become more common.

10-No scientist not competing for government funding believes that the impact of carbon dioxide on the Earth’s temperature is other than insignificant. But many continue to search for whatever small impact might exist. This gives the the left a chance to argue in favor of a larger impact. None has been proven to exist.

11- The Green New Deal promoted by socialists, leftists, Marxists and environmental radicals is intended to bring all activities of our lives under government control when insufficient energy must be rationed.

12- No productive society can be run on intermittent wind and solar power, but the effort to do so will injure every member of society except those hoping to become its rulers.

13- Every claim that continued use of coal, natural gas and oil is dangerous to society is totally false. However it is intended to scare the masses with little ability to reason critically.

14- The Earth’s temperature has varied since the Earth was formed billions of years ago, long before Homo sapiens walked the Earth. Currently the increasing amounts of carbon dioxide have a small and insignificant impact on the Earth’s temperature . We’re the CO2 concentration of 420 parts per million (ppm) to double to 840 PPM in the coming century it could produce an increased temperature of one degree Celsius which would be beneficial to all life on Earth.

15- Human caused global temperature change is the greatest fraud ever perpetrated on society.

16- In the 1970s many believed the Earth was cooling and every popular magazine had illustrations of coming ice ages. When cooling did not occur and the scare ended, power seekers changed their tune to global warming whose fear mongering still exists today. However a large number of climatologists now do believe that in about two decades the Earth may cool a small and manageable amount.

17- No computer model has ever correctly predicted the Earths’ temperature a decade into the future and yet radicals want us to change our economy based on model predictions a century into the future.

18- The effort to eliminate all coal, natural gas and oil is a world wide effort by those who desire a one world socialist government.

19- Most of the billionaires who control our media, lack only one thing in their lives, which is the power to run your life and the world. They already have all the possessions money can buy. They believe that having been smart enough to build companies to amass such wealth they are smart enough to run our lives better than we can.

20- While so many people think only of fuel and energy when they desire to eliminate coal, natural gas and oil from our lives, they fail to recognize that over 6000 products require derivatives from oil. Likely 80% of the items in the room in which you are reading this essay would not exist without products derived from hydrocarbons.

21- Nearly every year the United Nations holds a conference to discuss climate change. They are titled Conferences Of Parties or COPs. To date 26 have been held, the latest convened in Glasgow, Scotland in November, 2021. Their purpose is to discuss the elimination of fossil fuels and thereby reduce the increase in the Earth’s temperature based on mathematical models. Each year they request billions of dollars in reparations from the countries who have emitted large quantities of carbon dioxide. These funds are to be given to each undeveloped country to repair claimed damage from other countries CO2 emissions of which no harm has been proven. Details were partially established at the Paris Accord which was COP 15. To date little money has been given or received and each meeting is like the last in which as many as 25,000 bureaucrats assemble at lush vacation spots to discuss a fantasy now labeled The Theater of the Absurd by this author.

22- No greater force behind promoting human caused climate change is the United Nations who wishes to enhance its power over all counties of the world.

23- The vast majority of materials required to build wind turbines and solar power systems are made in China. (Source) ☼

The Profound Junk Science of Climate

by Norman Rogers, Heartland Institute

Climate change prophecy hangs its hat on computer climate models, yet these models have gigantic problems.

Kevin Trenberth, who was once in charge of modeling at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, has stated “[None of the] models correspond even remotely to the current observed climate [of the Earth].”

Despite the fact that models can’t properly model the Earth’s climate we are supposed to believe, if carbon dioxide has a certain effect in the models of Earth it will have the same effect on the real Earth.

Money and Confirmation Bias:

Climate models are an exemplary representation of confirmation bias, the psychological tendency to suspend one’s critical facilities in favor of welcoming what one expects or desires. Climate scientists can manipulate numerous adjustable parameters in, or tune, the models in order to produce a “good” results.

Technically, a good result would be that the climate model output can match climate history. But that good result competes with another kind of good result. That other good result is a prediction of a climate catastrophe. That sort of “good” result has elevated the social and financial status of climate science into the stratosphere.

Once money and status started flowing into climate science because of the disaster its denizens were predicting, there was no going back. Imagine that a climate scientist discovers gigantic flaws in the models and associated projections. That would open the door ending the massive flow of research dollars.

Who would continue to throw billions of dollars a year at climate scientists if there were no disasters to be prevented? (Read more) ☼

Thoughts to Ponder:

“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.” – H. L. Mencken

“The prospect of domination of the nation’s scholars by Federal employment, project allocation, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded.” – President Eisenhower’s farewell speech, 1961

“The ordaining of laws in favor of one part of the nation, to the prejudice and oppression of another, is certainly the most erroneous and mistaken policy.” —Benjamin Franklin (1774)

“It should be your care, therefore, and mine, to elevate the minds of our children and exalt their courage; to accelerate and animate their industry and activity; to excite in them an habitual contempt of meanness, abhorrence of injustice and inhumanity, and an ambition to excel in every capacity, faculty, and virtue. If we suffer their minds to grovel and creep in infancy, they will grovel all their lives.” —John Adams (1756)

“The time is now near at hand which must probably determine whether Americans are to be freemen or slaves . . Our cruel and unrelenting enemy leaves us only the choice of brave resistance, or the most abject submission.” – George Washington

“We should be unfaithful to ourselves if we should ever lose sight of the danger to our liberties if anything partial or extraneous should infect the purity of our free, fair, virtuous, and independent elections.” —John Adams (1797)
